How Long will my Hypnotherapy Session be?

When considering hypnotherapy, many people wonder why session lengths may vary , a first session 2 hours and subsequent sessions 1-1.5 hours. Some practitioners offer strict one-hour sessions, while others extend them to over three hours, branding them as “rapid change” sessions. But how long does a session really need to be?

A Results-Focused Approach

In my practice, I take a structured yet flexible approach to ensure the most efficient and effective treatment. My goal is to achieve the best therapeutic outcomes in the shortest time necessary. This means that while session lengths are set with a maximum duration, they are not rigid clients only stay for as long as is needed to make progress.

The Initial Session: Laying the Foundation

The first hypnotherapy session is crucial for understanding the client’s background, identifying the root causes of their challenges, and formulating a tailored treatment plan. This is why I schedule an initial session for up to two hours.

During this time, we:

  • Conduct a comprehensive history assessment

The objective is not to fill a time slot but to maximise meaningful progress.

Follow-Up Sessions: Adapting to Progress

Subsequent sessions are scheduled for between 1 and up to 1 ½ hours, but they often conclude earlier if the necessary work has been done. Think of it like booking a hotel room, just because you have it for the night doesn’t mean you have to stay the entire time if you’ve already gotten what you need from your visit.

This approach ensures that every session is:

  • Purposeful and focused
  • Adjusted to the client’s specific needs
  • Respectful of both time and financial investment

An Ethical Approach to Bookings

Some hypnotherapists sell packages of multiple sessions upfront. While this may work for some, it can also lock clients into unnecessary sessions if they make faster progress than expected. Instead, I book sessions individually. This client-centred approach ensures that treatment remains ethical, flexible, and driven by actual results rather than arbitrary time commitments.
